Cummins Confidential Special : Old News, New Low-Down

Cummins’ natural gas pivot is sitting in plain sight. Hydrogen fell into a $458 million impairment note, then the newsroom hauled years of CNG, RNG and X15N sales copy back onto the conveyor. The recycling is not the story. It is the evidence.


TCAP has already checked the serial plates. Cummins now stamps “originally published” above these pieces and calls them updated. Fine. We have done the paperwork. This special is about the cargo.

Taken together, these Cummins recycled newsroom articles form a remarkably tidy sales map. Natural gas provides the bridge. Renewable natural gas cleans the carbon arithmetic. Diesel keeps the established tills ringing. HELM protects Cummins if the market chooses another fuel. Finally, connected software keeps the engine reporting home long after the customer has paid for it.

This is not an archive. It is a parts bin from which Cummins has rebuilt the energy transition in its own image.


The Fuel Menu Is Four Years Out Of Date

Cummins originally published Natural Gas (CNG) vs. LPG, LNG, RNG and Diesel in May 2022 and updated it in August 2026. It still says natural gas vehicles do not generate particulate matter or volatile organic compounds. That is a wonderfully absolute claim for a subject where the US Department of Energy lists hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide among the relevant tailpipe emissions. Moreover, the department says lifecycle benefits depend on duty cycle, engine calibration, fuel economy and methane leakage. Cummins has taken a complicated comparison and removed every word that might make the salesman pause for breath.

The page also retains figures of almost 2,000 LPG stations, fewer than half as many CNG stations and roughly 55 public LNG stations. No current data date appears beside them. Whatever Cummins updated, it left the difficult machinery untouched and polished the fucking information panel.

Next comes Examples of Natural Gas Engines on Trucks and Buses, originally published in June 2022 and revived in August 2026. Its supporting evidence includes the proportion of American transit buses using natural gas in 2019. Better still, the page tells readers that UPS planned to purchase more than 6,000 CNG trucks between 2020 and 2022. A plan that ended four years ago is still being wheeled out as forward momentum.

That is not newsroom maintenance. Cummins has bolted a 2026 plate onto a chassis that still carries 2019 mileage and a delivery schedule ending in 2022. Nobody opened the bonnet because the old claim still points towards the product catalogue.


Carbon Negative By Appointment

Turning Landfill Waste into Energy began life in June 2023 and returned in August 2026. Capturing landfill gas can genuinely reduce harm. The EPA says recovery prevents methane escaping and allows the gas to replace other energy sources. However, the same agency identifies municipal landfills as America’s third-largest source of human-related methane emissions, responsible for approximately 14.4% in 2022.

Cummins starts with sensible methane recovery and quickly turns the landfill into a “valuable energy resource”. From there, RNG becomes carbon neutral or even carbon negative while Cummins engines emerge as the “optimal choice”. Preventing part of the damage caused by a waste dump does not make the dump a climate benefactor. Fixing a leak is useful. Bottling the captured leak and hanging a sustainability certificate from it is sales.

Cummins also updated the January 2024 piece Introduction to Renewable Natural Gas in August 2026. Unfortunately, it still announces that Cummins “will launch” the X15N in 2024. Somehow, the newsroom reached August 2026 while the article remained trapped behind a locked calendar door.

Its science has aged alongside the diary. Cummins describes methane as 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Current EPA figures put methane’s warming potential at 27 to 30 times over 100 years and 81 to 83 times over 20 years. More importantly, carbon-negative RNG is an outcome produced by feedstock, leakage assumptions, processing and lifecycle boundaries. It is not a molecular property delivered with every tank.

Cummins has taken a conditional accounting result, lacquered it green and nailed it above the X15N order desk.


The Gas Engine Comes With A Leash

Cummins originally published Enhancing the Experience of Natural Gas Customers with Cummins Clean Fuel Technologies in September 2023. Its idea of an enhanced experience begins with Cummins acquiring 50% of Momentum Fuel Technologies from Rush Enterprises. The finished arrangement puts the engine, tanks, fuel-management software, remote monitoring, diagnostics and more than 250 Cummins and Rush service locations around the customer.

Consultants will even help fleets navigate grants and incentives. Cummins therefore wants the engine sale, the storage system, the dashboard, the diagnostic feed, the public subsidy and the route back to the workshop. This is not merely customer support. It is commercial capture engineered with the same care as the fuel lines.

The environmental language is trim. The leash is underneath.

Meanwhile, The X15N, an Improved Design Thanks to Customer Feedback returned in August 2026 carrying claims of up to 500 horsepower, 1,850 lb-ft of torque, approximately 10% better fuel economy and nearly 40% more engine-braking power. Yet the comparison is primarily with Cummins’ older ISX12N natural gas engine. Cummins races its previous product around its own track and then presents itself with the cup.

The recycled article proudly explains that the X15N meets EPA and California regulations for 2024 before announcing a “new era”. Meeting 2024 standards in August 2026 is less a new era than an old showroom card nobody remembered to replace. Its largest environmental promises then climb back aboard RNG and the favourable accounting Cummins prepared earlier.


Diesel Writes Its Own Character Reference

Three Advanced Diesel Engine Innovations reveals where the modern business really lives. PrevenTech monitors engines remotely. Predictive Service Insights anticipates component failures. OptiTech changes software and engine parameters over the air. Acumen connects the engine directly to Cummins applications and future service integrations. These systems can undoubtedly help operators. They also ensure Cummins remains seated inside the commercial relationship throughout the engine’s working life.

Then the sermon begins. The article describes modern diesel engines as “90% cleaner” while claiming that aftertreatment “effectively” eliminates harmful emissions. However, this neat corporate history omits the EPA settlement involving illegal defeat devices in 630,000 Ram vehicles and undisclosed software affecting nearly one million vehicles overall. Cummins received a $1.675 billion penalty, with recalls and mitigation pushing the estimated total expense to roughly $2 billion.

Any Cummins history of diesel emissions that leaves out that machinery is not a history. It is a character reference the defendant wrote and printed on company stationery.


The Search Engine Joins The Sales Team

What Is a Diesel Engine? takes a more basic route. It explains cylinders, valves, pistons and four-stroke combustion before arriving at the intended destination: Cummins engines are the “most powerful and reliable engines”. No comparison appears. There is no methodology. The manufacturer simply awards itself first prize in a competition held behind its own reception desk.

The crankshaft converts linear movement into rotation. This article converts search traffic into sales leads.

Finally, Cummins updated Advanced Diesel Engines in August 2026 while retaining a discussion about buying a 2022 Ram pickup, a 2021 interview and a closing section promoting “the best diesel engines in 2022 and beyond”. Apparently “beyond” is now responsible for carrying four years of dead weight through the newsroom.

The Ram reference is particularly fucking exquisite. The EPA settlement covered Cummins-certified Ram 2500 and 3500 vehicles from model years 2013 through 2023. Nevertheless, the article assures readers that it is not merely the engines that are reliable. It is “the whole organization”.

That joke arrived with an invoice approaching $2 billion.


Hydrogen Died. Gas Inherited The Showroom

In May 2023, Cummins made hydrogen the centrepiece of its ACT Expo display. The company showcased the X15H hydrogen engine, fuel-cell powertrains and electrolysers while Jennifer Rumsey announced that Cummins was “actively scaling” electrolyser manufacturing. Hydrogen was not one path among many. It was the brightly lit future tying Cummins’ entire decarbonisation story together.

Then the future reached the accounts department.

Cummins’ 2025 annual report described “rapidly deteriorating” conditions across the electrolyser and wider hydrogen markets. Cummins fully impaired the electrolyser goodwill, then wrote down inventory, equipment and intangible assets. Severance and contract termination costs followed. Altogether, the charge reached $458 million, and Cummins said it intended to stop pursuing new commercial electrolyser activity while completing existing commitments.

Hydrogen moved from the exhibition stage to the impairment note.


The Cummins Natural Gas Pivot Reaches The Showroom

By ACT Expo 2026, Cummins showcased diesel engines, the X15N and L9N natural gas engines, hybrid technology, batteries and electric axles. Meanwhile, hydrogen had disappeared from the programme. Four months later, the newsroom began dragging natural gas comparisons, RNG sermons, landfill-gas stories, X15N advertising and Clean Fuel Technologies copy back onto the conveyor.

That is the arc. The hydrogen future collapsed, leaving an expensive hole in Destination Zero. Cummins filled the shop window with gas.

The recycled HELM article still keeps hydrogen somewhere in the misty distance, where the X15 and B-series platforms may eventually receive hydrogen variants. However, the current sales pressure sits behind natural gas, RNG and the X15N. Customers can buy those now. Cummins owns the engines, tanks, software and service network now. The hydrogen promise can remain hanging from the ceiling because nobody is being asked to deliver it now.

Cummins has not issued an obituary for every hydrogen programme. Corporations rarely extend that courtesy to their dead ambitions. They remove them from the display, bury the cost in the filings and wheel something saleable into the empty floor space.


Fresh Name Badges On Old Copy

The revisions also produced a curious movement of names. The 2022 fuel comparison originally credited Puneet Singh Jhawar and now credits David King. Its landfill companion made the same journey. The Clean Fuel Technologies article moved from Jhawar to Imon Uduehi. Meanwhile, the X15N piece went from a corporate byline to David King.

Perhaps this is routine editorial succession. However, Cummins does not explain who wrote the original text, who revised it or which author now owns the surviving claims. The original publication date remains visible while the original authorship quietly leaves through the staff entrance.

A byline is provenance. It is not a filter element that editors replace during scheduled servicing. Cummins has changed the name badge, straightened the boiler suit and sent the same copy back through the factory gate.


The Archive Has Picked A Side

The selection is the disclosure. Cummins once presented hydrogen as the technology that would carry combustion into a zero-carbon future. That future ended up as $458 million of impairments, write-downs, severance and contract termination costs. Natural gas then occupied the abandoned floor space.

These recycled articles are not random archive maintenance. Cummins has recommissioned old arguments to support the fuel it can still sell, service and surround with proprietary hardware today.

The dates are old. The sales pressure is live. Hydrogen died. The old bullshit has been remanufactured and returned to service.
