Cummins Confidential : Retreat or Suffer Defeat – I’m Back, 3 Peat!

TCAP took a few days off. Nothing dramatic. No injunction, no emergency board meeting in Columbus, no mysterious black van idling outside the house. I watched some football, neglected the blog and briefly experimented with the dangerous concept of having a fucking life.

Cummins, apparently sensing a temporary absence of adult supervision, used the opportunity to publish three newsroom pieces that look unrelated until you put them beside each other. One explains how the X15 and X10 diesel engines are being engineered through the 2027 emissions regime. Another explains why a brake repair should become a conversation about the entire braking system. The third explains why old, damaged or heavily used power-generation equipment need not be replaced when Cummins can rebuild, modernise and extend it instead.

Different products. Different divisions. Same commercial instinct.

Keep the diesel viable. Keep the truck earning. Keep the generator operating. Keep the customer inside the network.

And, above all, keep paying.

Diesel Is Dead Again

We begin, naturally, with the technology Cummins keeps inviting everyone to view as yesterday while simultaneously engineering the living fuck out of tomorrow.

On 20 August, Cummins published a detailed look inside the 2027 aftertreatment system for its HELM X15 and X10 diesel engines. The article is ostensibly about meeting tighter emissions standards. Read commercially, however, it is a lovely demonstration of what happens when regulation tells an engineering company that an extremely lucrative product needs to become substantially cleaner without becoming substantially less attractive to customers.

Cummins says the redesigned system has to deliver a dramatic reduction in NOx while preserving fuel economy, serviceability, packaging and the sort of operating economics fleet managers actually care about. Its engineers have therefore gone to considerable lengths to make the next generation of diesel feel reassuringly familiar wherever possible.

The X15 and X10 retain a single DEF doser. Not merely the same principle, but the same part number. Cummins product manager Ross Hauswald says customers have been relieved to learn this because some feared dual dosing, greater complexity and increased DEF consumption.

You can understand the anxiety. Fleets have spent years watching emissions legislation produce ever more elaborate plumbing around diesel engines, and every additional sensor, catalyst, injector, heater and clever fucking box represents another component capable of introducing itself to the dashboard at 2am.

Cummins’ answer is essentially: yes, there is considerably more going on underneath, but please remain calm. We have kept one familiar bit exactly where you left it.4


Destination Zero Takes The Scenic Route

The engineering itself is impressive.

Cummins says a single longer SCR unit would have created excessive back pressure and packaging difficulties, so engineers split the system into two SCR canisters operating in parallel. That arrangement produces a claimed 44% reduction in back pressure.

Electric heaters help bring the catalysts up to effective operating temperature more quickly and precisely. One sits upstream of the DPF and diesel oxidation catalyst, another ahead of the SCR, while a dedicated alternator provides the required electrical power without relying on the truck’s batteries.

Cummins also says the X15 should deliver up to a 3% fuel-economy improvement over its predecessor while keeping overall engine and aftertreatment weight broadly unchanged despite the additional emissions hardware.

That is serious engineering.

It is also serious engineering being deployed to ensure a fucking diesel engine remains commercially attractive after 2027.

This is where Destination Zero becomes more entertaining when read alongside the actual product work. The corporate strategy sounds like movement towards an ending. The engineering programme sounds like somebody checked the proposed ending, opened another spreadsheet and extended the contract.

Diesel has apparently been dying for years.

They are downstairs installing heaters.

Destination Zero appears to have been revised to Destination Up To 3% Better Fuel Economy – presumably in optimal conditions, during a solar eclipse, with a tailwind and somebody from Cummins holding the clipboard just right.


The 800,000-Mile Farewell Tour

Then there is the DPF.

Cummins says its diesel particulate filters are engineered to last up to 800,000 miles.

Eight hundred thousand.

That is not an orderly withdrawal from the combustion era. That is a fucking tenancy agreement.

Destination Zero may be glowing somewhere on the horizon, but this filter has packed lunch, redirected its post and told the neighbours not to wait up.

None of that means Cummins is wrong to improve diesel. If millions of diesel-powered commercial vehicles are going to remain in service, reducing emissions, improving fuel economy and extending component life is plainly better than doing none of those things.

The more interesting question is what Cummins’ investment tells us about the supposed transition.

This is not a company standing beside combustion with a watch, waiting for it to leave. Cummins is spending serious engineering effort making sure diesel remains viable, competitive and profitable under increasingly difficult regulatory conditions.

That is perfectly rational.

It is simply much less romantic than the sustainability copy.

The brochure says transition.

The engineers say same DEF doser, better efficiency, less back pressure and an 800,000-mile filter.

TCAP says perhaps somebody should introduce these departments.

This is Cummins lifecycle support in engineering form: keep the existing product compliant enough, efficient enough and familiar enough that customers have no compelling reason to leave it behind.


Round Two: Brake Safety Week Becomes Meritor Christmas

Four days later, Cummins turned its attention to brakes, conveniently during CVSA Brake Safety Week across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Inspectors were looking closely at commercial vehicle braking systems, so Cummins stepped forward with some entirely public-spirited advice from the company that also happens to own Meritor.

Do not just replace the obviously fucked bit.

Look at the whole system.

Pads, rotors, calipers, shoes, drums, S-cam

There is something wonderfully convenient about receiving brake-safety advice from the company standing beside the replacement-parts counter.

Imagine walking into a fire-safety seminar and discovering the speaker also owns the extinguisher company, the smoke-alarm company and, after a brief inspection, would quite like a word about your sprinkler system.

The advice can still be correct.

That is what makes it funny.

The customer gets safer equipment. The fleet gets better uptime. Proper diagnosis may prevent another premature failure. Cummins gets to occupy a larger part of the maintenance conversation, which is rather conveniently where Cummins lifecycle support starts generating invoices.

Everyone wins.

Especially the fucking catalogue.

And, naturally, the Cummins article ultimately points readers towards MeritorPartsXpress.

Because every great educational journey needs a destination.

Some end in enlightenment.

Round Three: Your Generator Has Been Refused Retirement

Then came 25 August, and by this point Cummins appeared to have decided subtlety was wasting valuable working hours.

The third article is called Built To Last, Rebuilt To Last Longer and targets rental and mining operators whose power-generation equipment may have suffered catastrophic failure, degraded through age, endured punishing service or been badly damaged by an arc flash.

In ordinary language, your expensive generator might be absolutely fucked.

Cummins would prefer that you do not pronounce anything prematurely.

There is still paperwork to complete.

Rather than replacing the machine outright, Cummins offers to send a representative to the site, assess the equipment, develop a customised refurbishment proposal and work out how much useful operating life can be extracted from what remains.

The initial site visit is promoted as being at no cost.

The quote, naturally, comes later.

Even industrial resurrection has a sales funnel.


Built To Last. Rebuilt To Invoice Again.

Cummins’ refurbishment programme can involve repair, modernisation, enhancements and customisation.

Then comes the gorgeous little flourish:

competitor part replacements.

There it fucking is.

Your generator has experienced catastrophic failure. Production is compromised. Everyone is standing around a machine that has possibly just tried to turn itself into modern art.

Cummins arrives, surveys the damage and, somewhere during the conversation about restoring operations, politely wonders whether now might also be an excellent opportunity to address that unfortunate rival-component situation.

This is not merely refurbishment.

It is account expansion with a torque wrench.

The machine gets another operating life.

Cummins gets another commercial opportunity.

And some competitor hardware may mysteriously fail to survive the procedure.

Nothing personal.

Just preventative maintenance.


Built To Last Longer Than Your Procurement Independence

Cummins says refurbishment can extend equipment life well beyond original expectations. It can also be cheaper and faster than replacement, particularly in remote operations or industries where prolonged downtime is ruinously expensive.

Again, the customer proposition is real.

Large power systems cost serious money. Replacement can involve long lead times, infrastructure work and operational disruption. A mine cannot simply put up an out-of-office message while procurement spends six months shopping for another generator.

If an existing unit can be restored safely and economically, refurbishment may be the obvious choice.

But Cummins is selling more than the repair itself.

It is selling continued attachment.

The old equipment remains useful. Cummins keeps supporting it. Modernisation becomes possible. Enhancements become possible. Rival components become Cummins components. The customer remains inside the service network rather than disappearing into another manufacturer’s ecosystem. That ecosystem is where Cummins lifecycle support stops being a slogan and starts becoming an aftermarket revenue model.

Built To Last is the engineering proposition.

Billed To Last is the commercial one.


One Cummins. One Network. One Very Long Relationship.

Programme manager Alfonso Rodriguez explains one of the central advantages himself: Cummins is one connected network.

Repair a unit in Florida and, if it later develops trouble in Wyoming, Washington or Canada, Cummins can continue supporting it through that network.

That is genuinely valuable to customers operating equipment across large territories.

It is also the dream configuration for the supplier.

Geography no longer breaks the relationship.

The customer moves.

The equipment moves.

The invoice follows.

That is what scale buys: not merely the ability to manufacture something, but the ability to remain commercially attached to it long after the original sale has disappeared into an old accounting period. Taken together, the three stories are almost a case study in Cummins lifecycle support: regulation, maintenance and refurbishment all feeding the same long-term customer relationship.

A generator might spend twenty years working.

Cummins can spend twenty years finding new reasons to know its serial number.

Parts. Service. Repairs. Refurbishment. Modernisation. Technical support. Eventually perhaps another generator.

Customer lifecycle sounds polite.

Cummins has turned it into an endurance event.


Three Articles, One Fucking Business Model

Now put the 3 Peat together.

The first article explains how Cummins has engineered its X15 and X10 diesel systems around much tougher 2027 emissions requirements while preserving familiar servicing characteristics and keeping the overall commercial proposition attractive.

Keep the engine viable.

The second tells customers that the obvious worn brake component should not be considered in isolation. Inspect the whole system, diagnose the underlying cause and preserve uptime.

Keep the truck viable.

Destination Zero Meets Recurring Revenue

And this is where the story gets more interesting than a cheap accusation of hypocrisy.

None of these activities necessarily contradicts Cummins’ transition strategy.

Cummins can develop zero-emissions technology while simultaneously making diesel cleaner and more competitive. It can sell new equipment while rebuilding old equipment. It can develop batteries and electric systems while making serious money servicing the machinery customers already own.

A company of Cummins’ size would be commercially fucking stupid not to.

What these three pieces expose is what the transition actually looks like once the inspirational graphics disappear and the accountants enter the room.

There is no grand ceremonial moment where Cummins switches off the old business and walks into a gleaming zero-emissions future.

There is overlap.

A lot of it.

Diesel gets cleaner because diesel still sells.

Old equipment gets rebuilt because old equipment can still generate revenue.

Aftermarket systems expand because every installed component creates another potential service relationship.

Meanwhile, Cummins develops whatever it hopes customers will buy next.

This is not a bridge between two eras.

It is a toll road running through both.


Keep Paying

That is why these three otherwise ordinary newsroom pieces become interesting when Cummins publishes them almost back-to-back.

Separately, they are standard corporate material: an engineering explainer, a brake-maintenance article and a refurbishment pitch.

Nobody calls the fucking Pulitzer committee.

Together, they show the muscle underneath Cummins’ commercial model.

Keep existing products viable.

Keep the customer inside the service environment.

Keep the installed base generating opportunities.

Replace competitor components where possible.

Extend equipment life.

Maintain the relationship.

Then, when the customer finally needs whatever comes next, be standing there ready to sell that too.

Cummins can call it Cummins lifecycle support.

TCAP calls it an extremely sophisticated way of ensuring the customer can never quite finish shopping.

The engine can age.

The brakes can wear.

The generator can get cooked in an arc flash and return with several suspiciously Cummins-branded organs.

The revenue relationship survives.

Perhaps that is the real Destination Zero.

Zero chance they stop trying to sell you something.

Cummins dropped three.
