
Cummins published two pieces on the same day and accidentally explained the whole business model. At IAA Transportation, the future is battery-electric, hybrid, natural gas and advanced diesel. Over in Power Systems, the future is batteries, generators, renewables, grid power and onsite generation all piled together. Choose a technology? Fuck that. Cummins would rather sell you something whichever technology you choose. Welcome to Destination Whatever Pays.
There is something almost admirable about the honesty of it. On 14 September 2026, Cummins arrived at IAA Transportation in Hannover with enough competing versions of the future to stock a small industrial supermarket. Battery-electric trucks were in. Natural gas was in. Hybrid was in. Advanced diesel was still very much fucking in. Euro 7 aftertreatment stood nearby with a clipboard while Accelera brought the batteries and HELM kept the engine department busy.
Then, on the same day, Cummins published another piece about the changing electricity grid. Battery Energy Storage Systems were in. Generator sets were in. Solar was in. Grid power was in. Onsite generation was in. The customer no longer needed to choose one technology because Cummins could sell several of them at once and then sell the controls required to make them talk to each other.
Two articles. Two markets. One beautiful philosophy.
Never let an energy transition get between Cummins and a purchase order.
Many Paths Forward, Conveniently Through Cummins
The IAA headline is almost too perfect: “Cummins showcases many paths forward at IAA Transportation 2026.” Many paths sounds wonderfully open-minded and customer-friendly. It also sounds like a motorway interchange where every slip road eventually returns you to the same fucking till.
Cummins and Accelera announced plans to expand European battery manufacturing, with advanced LFP batteries aimed at buses and trucks. Amy Davis, President of Accelera and Components, talks about growing demand for battery-electric commercial vehicles and helping customers scale. That is real manufacturing, real electrification and potentially a very significant part of the future commercial-vehicle market.
Then the engine department walks through the door.
Cummins HELM exists partly to give customers different fuel choices from common engine platforms. At Hannover that means the new B7.2, the X15N natural-gas engine and the X10. The X15N keeps heavy-duty combustion alive on natural gas, while the X10 supports hybrid applications and sits within an architecture capable of advanced diesel and potential future fuels. The B7.2 arrives designed around tightening emissions requirements.
Battery-electric over here, natural gas over there, hybrid in the middle and advanced diesel round the back. Future fuels can take whichever chair becomes available.
Cummins calls this multiple pathways.
Of course it fucking does.
Destination Zero Has A Diesel Lane
Cummins has spent years talking about Destination Zero, which at least linguistically suggests that somebody eventually intends to arrive somewhere. There is a starting point, a journey and, presumably, a destination where the zero bit finally happens.
Yet the Cummins stand at IAA looks less like a destination and more like an airport departure board during a thunderstorm. Battery-electric is boarding. Natural gas is boarding. Hybrid is boarding. Advanced diesel is somehow still boarding. Future fuels have been delayed until further notice, while aftertreatment would like everybody to remove their belt and proceed through security.
The logic is commercially sensible. Brett Merritt, President of Cummins Engine Business, says customers need solutions that work today while preparing for tomorrow. Fleet operators do not replace millions of trucks overnight because somebody unveiled a sustainability PowerPoint. Infrastructure, regulation, vehicle cost, duty cycle and fuel availability all matter.
But that is precisely why Destination Zero starts looking less like a destination and more like a very flexible sales territory. Cummins can keep supplying the technology of today while manufacturing pieces of tomorrow, then present the entire catalogue as one coherent march towards the same green horizon.
Apparently the road to zero has a diesel services.
Whatever Your Path, Please Visit The Cashier
The IAA release eventually dispenses with whatever mystery remained. Cummins invites visitors to explore hybrid systems, advanced diesel, natural gas and battery-electric power before assuring them that “whatever your path, Cummins is your trusted partner.”
There it is.
That is the strategy in one sentence.
If battery-electric adoption accelerates, Cummins has Accelera. If combustion hangs around longer than expected, Cummins has engines. If natural gas becomes the compromise, Cummins has X15N. If customers want hybrid, Cummins can provide hybrid capability. If advanced diesel survives under increasingly strict emissions rules, Cummins still has diesel and the aftertreatment hardware required to keep it compliant.
Cummins does not need to predict one winner correctly if it can arrange to sell equipment to nearly everybody entering the race.

Then The Grid Article Arrives Carrying More Shopping Bags
A few clicks away on the same corporate website, Lucio Kroll and Aaron Gold are discussing Battery Energy Storage Systems, generator sets, renewables, data centres and the changing electricity grid. The subject matter is different, but the commercial instinct is almost identical.
Customers, Kroll explains, increasingly need integrated systems rather than a single technology. Batteries can work beside generators. Renewables can work beside batteries. Grid supply can work beside onsite generation. Controls sit across the whole thing and decide when each component should wake up, calm down or hand the load to something else.
Cummins has discovered the glorious commercial possibilities of the word “and.”
Not batteries or generators. Batteries and generators. Not grid or onsite generation. Grid and onsite generation. Not old infrastructure or new infrastructure, but a large integrated system in which Cummins has a reasonable chance of supplying several boxes.
It may be the most profitable conjunction in the English language.
The Battery Does Not Actually Make Electricity
Aaron Gold provides an important clarification about BESS: it is “not an energy creating device.”. Correct. A battery stores and manages electricity. Something else has to generate the stuff in the first place.
This is where Cummins Power Systems begins smiling.
Battery storage can be genuinely useful. It can smooth demand, shave peaks, respond almost instantly to sudden changes, store excess renewable generation and reduce the number of hours an engine has to operate. In some applications it can materially cut fuel consumption and emissions while making the wider power system more efficient.
What it does not necessarily do is kill the generator.
Sometimes it makes the generator better.
That is very convenient when you happen to sell fucking generators.
The Generator Has Made A New Friend
Cummins explains that a BESS can react almost immediately when power conditions change, while a generator remains valuable when an outage lasts longer than the battery can sensibly cover. The two technologies therefore become complementary rather than mutually exclusive.
Eventually the obvious question arrives: does BESS replace the genset?
Lucio Kroll says no.
The podcast discussion instead presents batteries and generators as a “dynamic duo.” Batman and Robin. Gin and tonic. New energy technology and the old combustion machine standing beside it looking considerably less unemployed than some transition narratives might suggest.
The clean-energy revolution has not come to murder the generator. It has come to improve its working conditions.
Cummins must be fucking devastated.
67% Less Diesel, 100% Surviving Generator Business
Cummins gives a good practical example of why the combination can make sense. One customer had three prime diesel generators operating throughout the day. Adding a relatively small 400kWh BESS reportedly reduced diesel consumption across those units by 67%, producing annual savings of roughly $30,000.
That is meaningful. Burning substantially less diesel is plainly better than burning substantially more diesel, and there is no need to perform ideological gymnastics around a useful engineering result.
TCAP does, however, own a calculator.
A 67% reduction leaves 33%.
More importantly for Cummins, the generators remain part of the system. The battery has not arrived with a machete and slaughtered the incumbent business model. It has arrived as another piece of equipment that can reduce fuel use, smooth operation, extend equipment life and potentially be sold beside the machines Cummins was already selling.
Cleaner system. Lower fuel bill. Longer generator life.
Same fucking generator department.
Everybody Wins, Especially The Supplier Of Everything
This is where the two September 14 articles snap together.
The transportation business says customers should have multiple powertrain pathways. The power-generation business says customers increasingly need multiple technologies operating together. Both arguments can be perfectly rational for the customer, but they are also commercially magnificent for a company whose portfolio stretches across engines, batteries, generators, controls, aftertreatment, electronics and integrated power systems.
Cummins does not need to bet the company on one interpretation of the energy transition. It can hedge across several of them simultaneously. If one technology grows slowly, another may keep producing revenue. If batteries need generators beside them, Cummins can sell both. If diesel remains viable longer than expected, Cummins already owns that table too.
It does not have to pick the winning horse.
It can operate the fucking bookmaker.
AI Ate The Grid
Then artificial intelligence wanders into the story, because apparently no modern power discussion is complete until AI has arrived and eaten everything in sight.
Cummins says AI and data-centre growth are producing enormous new electricity demand while utilities struggle to build generation and network capacity quickly enough. Kroll describes customers facing situations where the grid cannot deliver the power required within the timeframe their business expansion demands.
The answer is increasingly bring your own power.
Companies that cannot wait years for utility reinforcement may need onsite generation, storage and sophisticated controls to bridge the gap. That creates demand not merely for a generator or a battery, but for complete power architecture designed around reliability, speed and whatever grid connection is actually available.

The Cloud Is Somebody Else’s Generator Problem
The popular image of artificial intelligence is strangely weightless. Clouds, models, tokens, silicon and a soft blue glow around immaculate server racks while somebody in California says “inference” during an earnings call.
Downstairs, reality is sweating.
Data centres consume vast amounts of electricity. New facilities want capacity faster than utilities can always supply it, and operators cannot build multibillion-dollar computing infrastructure around the assumption that everybody will simply cross their fingers when the grid gets tight.
So batteries enter. Microgrids enter. Controls enter. Onsite generation enters. Backup power becomes primary power for awkward periods. Renewable generation becomes another input to manage rather than the complete solution.
Then Cummins walks in carrying a catalogue thick enough to stop a door.
The cloud got hungry. The grid got nervous.
Cummins brought a genset.

Near the end of the Power Onward discussion, the presenters play a little either-or game.

Of course you fucking do.
By now, refusing to choose has become a corporate art form. Battery or generator? Both. Grid or onsite generation? Both. Advanced diesel or future fuels? Depends where you are and what the customer needs. Natural gas or electrification? Cummins would like to show you several brochures before you leave.
Somewhere, a procurement manager is desperately looking for a checkbox marked ONE THING while Cummins keeps adding optional extras.
The Transition Without The Awkward Bit
Energy transitions normally create losers. New technologies eventually destroy markets that once looked permanent. Steam displaced sail, motor vehicles displaced horses, digital cameras gutted film, and streaming turned shelves of physical media into nostalgic furniture.
Cummins is trying to navigate a transition where as few Cummins businesses as possible experience that unpleasant middle bit.
Battery systems do not necessarily replace generators; they optimise them. Hybridisation does not necessarily kill engines; it gives them an electric companion. Natural gas does not abandon combustion; it changes what enters the cylinders. Advanced diesel remains commercially useful while emissions regulations tighten, which in turn creates demand for increasingly sophisticated aftertreatment.
The new world does not necessarily arrive and kill the old one.
Sometimes it gets bolted onto the side.
Preferably by Cummins.
And There Is Nothing Stupid About That
Commercially, the strategy is clever. A company with enormous expertise and installed market share in engines and power generation would be insane to abandon profitable incumbent businesses years before customers stop buying from them. Equally, it would be insane to ignore batteries, electrification, controls and storage while those markets expand.
Cummins is hedging.
That is what diversified industrial companies do.
The comedy begins when the hedge is wrapped inside the sweeping moral theatre of Destination Zero, as though every product in the catalogue is simply marching obediently towards one clean endpoint. They are not. Some technologies eliminate tailpipe emissions at the point of use. Others reduce emissions. Some burn natural gas. Some burn diesel more efficiently. Some help existing generators run less frequently. Others exist because the electricity grid cannot expand quickly enough to satisfy enormous new demand.
Those products may all have legitimate uses.
They are not all the same fucking destination.
Destination Zero Meets Destination Revenue
Cummins reported $33.7 billion in sales in 2025, which is useful context because it reminds everyone what sort of institution we are dealing with.
Not a university laboratory. Not a climate charity. Not monks tending hydrogen cells on a mountainside.
Cummins is a giant industrial company whose job is to sell equipment and make money. Destination Zero therefore has to coexist with another destination that appears somewhat less frequently in the sustainability material: Destination Revenue.
The interesting question is what happens when customers still want diesel engines, natural-gas engines and generator sets while the company simultaneously wants to position itself at the front of batteries, storage and electrification.
The September 14 newsroom answered that with unusual clarity. Cummins will sell the new technology. It will sell the existing technology. It will sell the technology connecting them together. It will sell the battery beside the generator and the generator required when the battery cannot carry the load indefinitely.
Then it will explain how wonderfully flexible the transition has become.
Whatever Happens Next
Battery-electric, advanced diesel, natural gas, hybrid, BESS, gensets, renewables, grid power, onsite generation, microgrids, controls and aftertreatment all appear somewhere inside the same commercial universe.
Cummins does not need to know exactly which technology wins. It has spent years assembling a portfolio designed to survive almost every answer.
There is nothing commercially irrational about that.
Just stop pretending the map only has one fucking destination.
