
Back in March, TCAP found Cummins validating a 78-litre natural-gas engine for hydraulic fracturing and called it “The Green Halo Over A Drill Bit”. On 15 September, the experiment became a product. EPA Mobile Off-Highway certification is approved, full-unit production has begun and Cummins says customer deployment is expanding. The Cummins HSK78G fracking engine produces 3,000 bhp from twelve cylinders and Cummins describes it as the defining engine of a wider Spark-Ignited Pumping Power portfolio. Better still, the sales pitch promises fleets can “operate the way they always have”. Destination Zero goes fracking. Like Jeffrey Dahmer shopping for greens.
There are corporate contradictions which require six months of forensic archaeology to expose. Someone changes a sentence in an annual report, an old PDF vanishes from the website, three executives use slightly different language and eventually a picture emerges from the sediment. Then there is Cummins, which occasionally drives the contradiction onto the forecourt, leaves the keys in it and publishes the technical specifications.
This one has 78 litres of displacement.
Cummins says the HSK78G combines lean-burn natural-gas technology, variable-speed capability, 10,300 lb-ft of peak torque and diesel-like transient performance for hydraulic fracturing. It has been designed to integrate with existing frac equipment, tolerate variations in gas composition and deliver the kind of familiar load response that operators already understand. That is serious engineering directed at a serious industrial problem.
The problem, unfortunately for anyone trying to sell Destination Zero as an uncomplicated march away from the fossil age, is that the serious industrial problem being solved is how to make fracking work better.
The Cummins HSK78G Fracking Engine Leaves The Test Cell
TCAP caught this programme while the grease was still warm.
In February, Cummins said the HSK78G had accumulated more than 10,000 hours across test-cell validation and demanding frac-field operations. The programme was still moving towards certification and broader fleet deployment, with the final variable-speed configuration being validated in live operating environments. When we covered it in March, Cummins was effectively standing beside the test rig saying that its giant natural-gas fracking engine was nearly ready for the world.
Six months later, here we are.
Certification under the EPA Large Spark-Ignition Mobile Off-Highway regime has been secured. Cummins has moved into full-unit production and says deployment is broadening as availability increases across the hydraulic-fracturing market. The workshop phase has become a production schedule, the field test has become a catalogue item, and the green halo we spotted in March has acquired a fucking part number.
That progression matters because it kills any temptation to treat the HSK78G as some experimental cul-de-sac, an engineering curiosity that happened to spend a few afternoons around an oilfield. Cummins has tested it, certified it, industrialised it and started making the bastard.
The frac pad was not a detour.
It was the destination.
From Generator Set To Geological Persuasion
The HSK78G itself has history. Cummins first launched the 78-litre natural-gas platform in 2019 as a fixed-speed generator series, pitching it across applications including manufacturing, hospitals, greenhouses, landfill gas and agricultural biogas. It was already a serious piece of machinery, designed around high efficiency, fuel flexibility and the ability to cope with varying natural-gas quality.
Then somebody looked at this enormous engine and apparently thought: you know what this needs? Fracking.
Cummins and Liberty Energy entered a strategic partnership in 2024, announced publicly in January 2025, to adapt the platform for Liberty’s digiPrime hydraulic-fracturing system. The engineering challenge was substantial. A generator sitting at fixed speed is living a very different life from an engine attached to pumping equipment that has to cope with rapid changes in load, speed and operating demand. Cummins therefore developed the variable-speed version around faster response, load acceptance, transmission flexibility and integration into existing frac hardware.
That is what makes the story better than simply laughing at the size of the engine. This is not an elderly generator being wheeled onto an oilfield because someone found a spare coupling in the workshop. Cummins and Liberty deliberately developed the platform into a specialised tool for hydraulic fracturing.
The engine family had a previous career.
The fracking job is new.
LinkedIn would call that transferable skills.
TCAP calls it an absolutely fucking spectacular career pivot.
Operate The Way You Always Have
Then we reach Cummins’ own Spark-Ignited Pumping Power website, where the marketing department wanders into the story carrying a loaded shotgun and somehow manages to point it directly at Destination Zero.
Cummins explains that the HSK78G has been engineered to match existing platform designs. Its dimensions, system alignment and field-ready configuration are intended to let operators adopt natural gas without ripping apart the surrounding machinery or reinventing how the fleet works. Beneath the heading “Lower complexity, more capability”, Cummins delivers six extraordinary words.
“Operate the way they always have”.
That is not TCAP paraphrasing the strategy after three whiskies.
That is the fucking sales pitch.
A second heading offers “New fuel, familiar feeling”, while Cummins repeatedly emphasises diesel-like performance and a transition designed to feel seamless rather than disruptive. The entire proposition has been built around reducing the amount of operational upheaval involved in changing the engine’s fuel.
Commercially, this is excellent. Nobody operating an expensive frac fleet wants environmental progress delivered in the form of six months of downtime, an incompatible drivetrain and a manual the size of Ohio. Cummins has attacked the adoption barrier properly: make the technology cleaner at the point of operation, make it familiar to crews, make it fit existing equipment and make the economics work.
But look at what happens to the grand language of transition when it finally reaches the dirt.
The fuel changes.
The engine improves.
The emissions profile changes.
The geological formation still gets the shit fractured out of it.
Fracking Has Been Given Better Transient Response
This is where Cummins deserves slightly more serious scrutiny than the easy joke allows.
Destination Zero has never actually meant that Cummins intends to stop selling every combustion product tomorrow morning. Its published strategy explicitly uses a dual path. Cummins develops battery-electric, fuel-cell and other zero-emissions technologies while simultaneously reducing emissions from the internal-combustion products and fuels customers continue to use during the transition.
That argument has logic. Replacing a dirtier engine with a cleaner one today can produce emissions benefits while zero-emissions technologies, economics and infrastructure develop. Cummins has been saying versions of that for years.
The HSK78G exposes the elasticity of the proposition.
Cummins is not merely improving an unavoidable legacy machine which will grudgingly remain in service until something cleaner replaces it. It has invested in adapting a major engine platform for a particular extractive activity, worked with Liberty to develop the system, accumulated thousands of field hours, secured certification, entered full production and identified the result as the foundation for a broader well-servicing product portfolio.
That is a different flavour of transition.
Fracking has not been abolished, shamed or even mildly inconvenienced.
It has been given better transient response.
The First Engine, Not The Last
The most consequential sentence in Cummins’ 15 September announcement is not the one about certification.
It is the one about what comes next.
Cummins describes the HSK78G as the first and defining engine within its Spark-Ignited Pumping Power portfolio. More importantly, the company says future SPP solutions will build upon the performance, efficiency and integration foundations established by the HSK78G.
Read that again without the corporate upholstery.
This is the foundation.
Cummins has not built one natural-gas fracking engine, wiped its hands and wandered back towards batteries. It has created a named product portfolio for well-servicing applications and says the HSK78G establishes the benchmarks for what follows.
That turns the story from an entertaining contradiction into something considerably more revealing. Destination Zero is not simply tolerating oil and gas while waiting for the market to change. Inside Cummins, engineers are still being deployed to make specialised equipment for that market better, and the company is explicitly planning further products on the back of what it has learned.
Cummins says so itself. The September release describes the HSK78G’s deployment as part of its continued commitment to advancing technology and innovation for the oil and gas market.
Continued commitment.
There is some magnificent fucking acreage between those words and Destination Zero.
The Route To Zero Has An Oilfield Services Exit
Cummins’ 2025 Climate Transition Plan describes Destination Zero as an alignment of its business and sustainability strategies, with low-carbon and zero-emissions technologies intended to expand across the markets the company serves as it works towards its longer-term decarbonisation targets.
Then reality arrives in steel-toe boots.
Oil and gas remains a market Cummins wants to serve. Hydraulic fracturing remains an application Cummins wants to improve. Natural gas remains one of the fuels Cummins believes can offer near-term reductions compared with conventional alternatives. The company therefore gets to stand with one foot in decarbonisation and the other on a frac trailer without believing those positions are contradictory.
That is precisely what makes Destination Zero such a useful piece of corporate language. It does not require Cummins to leave the existing industrial economy behind. It allows the company to improve it, extend it, diversify it and keep making money from it while zero-emissions businesses develop alongside.
There is nothing commercially irrational about that. In fact, it may be one of the smartest things about Cummins’ strategy.
The fucking name is where the comedy lives.
If your destination is Zero, there is something wonderfully surreal about opening a specialist product line whose first landmark is a 78-litre engine built to help the oil and gas industry hydraulically fracture rock.
Somewhere, a sat-nav has become philosophical.
Lower Emissions, Same Hole
Natural gas does give Cummins a substantive argument here. The HSK78G uses lean-burn technology and Cummins says it can lower overall fleet emissions while delivering the familiar performance operators expect from diesel equipment. Liberty has likewise developed its newer frac fleets around reducing fuel consumption and operational emissions compared with conventional diesel pumping systems.
That is worth acknowledging because the strongest criticism does not require pretending an improvement is worthless merely because it falls short of sainthood.
Cleaner machinery is cleaner machinery.
The wider climate story is less tidy. Methane is the principal component of natural gas, and the US Environmental Protection Agency identifies the oil and natural-gas sector as the largest industrial source of methane emissions in the United States. The environmental arithmetic therefore extends beyond what leaves the HSK78G’s exhaust during a frac cycle. Production, processing, transport and leakage belong in the same fucking equation.
More fundamentally, the engine is being used to improve the economics and operation of hydrocarbon extraction. Lowering emissions from that process can be beneficial while still helping the process itself remain competitive.
Both things can be true.
That tension is where the interesting story sits.
Cummins’ answer to one environmental problem is an extremely sophisticated machine designed to help another part of the fossil economy keep operating.
A Seamless Transition To Continuing
The word seamless matters.
Cummins does not want the customer to feel that moving to the HSK78G requires abandoning the operating model it already knows. Existing platform integration matters. Familiar response matters. Serviceability matters. Diesel-like behaviour matters. The engine controller even adjusts for changing gas composition at different sites so crews do not have to stand around fucking about with manual tuning whenever the fuel changes.
Every piece of engineering points towards continuity.
That is not a criticism of the engineers. It is their assignment. A successful industrial product solves the customer’s problem instead of demanding the customer develop an entirely new set of problems as an entrance fee.
The absurdity appears when that engineering philosophy meets the language of transformation.
A revolution which has been meticulously designed so everybody can operate the way they always have is a peculiar fucking revolution.
No smashed furniture.
No overturned tables.
Nobody even has to move the pump.
The future turns up, checks the existing chassis dimensions and politely asks where it should bolt itself in.
Cummins Has Not Been Caught Doing This
That point is important because the HSK78G is not an embarrassing secret.
Cummins is proud of it.
The company has published the specifications, named the application, photographed the hardware, documented the Liberty partnership, advertised the emissions advantages, celebrated the certification and explicitly described the product as part of its ongoing technological commitment to oil and gas.
There is no trapdoor to expose.
The contradiction is sitting under exhibition lighting.
That makes the story more useful, not less. Cummins’ version of the energy transition can accommodate a substantial zero-emissions business, increasingly efficient combustion technology, natural gas, diesel, hydrogen, batteries, mining equipment, data-centre generators and a new family of pumping-power products for the oilfield. The company can place almost any improvement which reduces emissions somewhere along that road.
Destination Zero consequently becomes a very long road indeed.
Plenty of fuel stations.
Excellent aftermarket support.
Fracking available at the next junction.
The Green Halo Has A Serial Number
Back in March, TCAP wrote that Cummins was bragging about making fracking better. At the time, the HSK78G remained in the final stretch of development, surrounded by test hours, field validation and an approaching certification milestone.
Now the paperwork is done.
Cummins has moved into full production. Customer deployment is widening. The HSK78G sits at the front of a named product portfolio and Cummins says future SPP offerings will build on the foundations it establishes.
That is the update.
The green halo has a serial number.
There is no need to invent some grand conspiracy or exaggerate the technology into something it is not. Cummins has provided the whole fucking picture itself. Reducing emissions sits alongside growth and a continued commitment to oil and gas, while customers are encouraged to transition fuels without sacrificing productivity, reliability or profitability. The company also intends to keep developing technology around that market.
Those ambitions fit together perfectly well on a balance sheet.
They look considerably stranger on a Destination Zero poster.
Operate The Way You Always Have
In the end, the HSK78G could very well be a good engine.
That almost makes the thing funnier.
The engineers appear to have understood the brief completely. Give operators natural gas without making the machine feel alien. Get 3,000 bhp from twelve cylinders. Make the package fit established hardware. Cope with changing gas quality. Reduce complexity. Improve serviceability. Deliver the transient response the frac crew already knows. Get it certified. Get it into production. Build the next products from there.
No fucking problem.
It is Corporate Communications that has to live with what all of that means when somebody walks back upstairs and opens the Destination Zero folder.
The most honest line Cummins has written about the transition may therefore be the one buried on the product page rather than anything in a sustainability report.
Operate the way they always have.
There it is.
The philosophy.
The engineering brief.
The commercial strategy.
Change enough to claim progress. Improve enough to cut emissions. Innovate enough to protect the market. Make the transition painless enough that the customer never has to seriously contemplate leaving.
Then bolt 78 litres of natural-gas machinery onto the frac rig and send the fucker back to work.
