Cummins Confidential : Cummins GTA38GCE Gets Hazardous-Locations Certification While Cummins Misplaces Half The Fucking Engine

Cummins has announced that its GTA38GCE natural-gas engine is now certified for use in Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations.

Wonderful. Someone found a shield for the ignition system, fitted certified control components and released the corporate trumpets.

Unfortunately, while Cummins was busy certifying the engine for hazardous environments, its own website appears to have misplaced six cylinders and approximately 18.9 litres of displacement.

That is not TCAP exaggeration. It is what happens when Cummins’ live GTA38GCE product page collides head-on with Cummins’ own official GTA38GCE brochure.

Apparently, the sparks are under control.

The specifications department is still on fire.


The Cummins GTA38GCE Announcement Arrives Months After Availability

Cummins published its announcement on 4 August 2026. However, the company says the certified configuration has been available since March 2026.

Therefore, this is not so much a product launch as a five-month-late newsroom resurrection.

The release says the certification expands the engine’s suitability for gas-compression work in enclosed or higher-risk operating environments. It also praises improved reliability, consistent operation, longer service life, reduced maintenance and improved uptime.

Plenty of claims march through the door.

Numbers do not.

Cummins provides no comparative failure rate, maintenance reduction, service-life increase, field-test duration or quantified uptime improvement in the release. Instead, readers receive the standard industrial hymn sheet: demanding environments, dependable solutions, field insights, robust components and customers operating “confidently.”

Confidence is cheap when the evidence has been left in another fucking building.

Jiabo Zhang, Cummins’ Power Systems Business Unit Oil and Gas Market Leader, says the certification demonstrates the company’s focus on dependable, field-proven products. Yet the announcement does not identify the certification number, gas group, temperature class or the specific test results behind those broad assurances.

Those details may exist in the formal certification documentation and equipment markings. Nevertheless, Cummins did not put them in the corporate victory parade.

It preferred adjectives.


Cummins Appears To Have Lost Half The GTA38GCE

Now we reach the machinery cabinet where somebody has stored the clown shoes.

Cummins’ current GTA38GCE product page describes the engine as a natural-gas V-block with:

  • 18.8 litres of displacement;
  • 1,150 cubic inches;
  • a 6.25-inch bore;
  • a 6.25-inch stroke;
  • 760 horsepower;
  • a dry weight of 10,176 pounds; and
  • a 70-gallon oil capacity.

Meanwhile, Cummins’ official 2019 GTA38GCE brochure describes the engine as:

  • a 12-cylinder engine;
  • 37.7 litres;
  • 2,300 cubic inches;
  • the same 6.25-inch bore;
  • the same 6.25-inch stroke;
  • the same 760 horsepower;
  • the same 10,176-pound dry weight; and
  • the same 70-gallon oil capacity.

That is not a rounding difference.

The live page gives exactly half the displacement stated in Cummins’ brochure. Moreover, a 12-cylinder engine with that stated bore and stroke works out at roughly 2,300 cubic inches, not 1,150.

Either the brochure is wrong or the current product page is wrong. Both cannot be correct.

The most obvious explanation is that Cummins’ live page has somehow published the displacement of half its V12. Perhaps the other bank of cylinders has been assigned to Accelera. Maybe it is progressing independently through Destination Zero. Possibly it has joined the missing evidence from the press release.

Whatever happened, this is Cummins advertising a hazardous-location engine while apparently failing to count the whole fucking engine.

For a company selling precision, reliability and technical confidence, that is an exquisite piece of self-sabotage.


What Class I, Division 2 Actually Means

Class I, Division 2 certification matters. Equipment used around flammable gases and vapours must not become an ignition source under the conditions covered by its approval.

However, the classification is narrower than Cummins’ sweeping “safe operation in hazardous environments” language may suggest.

Under the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration definition, a Class I location is one where flammable gases or vapours may form an ignitable mixture. Division 2 generally covers areas where those materials normally remain inside closed systems, where ventilation ordinarily prevents an ignitable concentration, or where hazardous gas may arrive from an adjacent Division 1 area.

In other words, Division 2 primarily concerns abnormal events, accidental releases, equipment breakdowns or ventilation failures. It is not a magic badge authorising the engine to stroll into every explosive atmosphere on Earth.

OSHA also requires equipment suitability to account for the particular gas or vapour involved, its ignition characteristics and operating temperature. Consequently, the useful engineering information includes the certification’s precise group and temperature limitations.

Cummins’ press release does not explain them.

Instead, it says the certified GTA38GCE uses a shielded ignition system and C1D2-rated control components developed with FW Murphy. The company also says the configuration retains fault detection and diagnostic capabilities used in the field for ten years.

Fine. Those are legitimate engineering improvements.

The bullshit begins when a tightly scoped safety certification gets inflated into a fog of global dependability, extended life and corporate virtue without the underlying performance data coming along for the ride.

Certification shows that a specified configuration met a specified standard for a specified use.

It does not certify the press release.


Hazardous-Locations Certification Is Not An Environmental Halo

There is another distinction Cummins would probably prefer readers not to dwell on.

Class I, Division 2 certification concerns ignition hazards. It does not make the GTA38GCE emissions-free, low-carbon or environmentally virtuous.

This is a 760-horsepower reciprocating natural-gas engine designed to power gas-compression equipment. Its job is to help move fossil gas through production and transportation infrastructure.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, natural-gas engines used for compression can emit nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds and methane. Methane can escape through incomplete combustion, fuel-system leaks or engine malfunctions.

Cummins’ own product material calls the GTA38GCE merely “EPA SI NSPS Compliant Capable.” That phrase performs some spectacular corporate weightlifting.

The older official brochure explains what “capable” means: the catalyst is customer-supplied, while the owner or operator must conduct site-compliance testing and submit the required documentation. The current product page likewise describes the three-way catalyst emissions package as optional and customer supplied.

Thus, Cummins supplies the capability.

The customer supplies the catalyst.

The operator proves compliance.

The newsroom supplies the fucking halo.


Destination Zero Takes Another Detour Through The Gas Field

Cummins repeatedly presents itself as an energy-transition leader. Its Climate Transition Plan promises progress towards net zero, lower product emissions and cleaner power.

That same plan admits that products in use dominate the company’s greenhouse-gas footprint. Indeed, Cummins says more than 90% of its lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions come from products in use.

Every engine matters, then.

Especially a ten-thousand-pound natural-gas engine built to keep gas-compression infrastructure operating longer.

The International Energy Agency estimates that natural-gas operations produced nearly 35 million tonnes of methane emissions during 2024. It also says upstream operations account for approximately 85% of oil-and-gas methane emissions. Those are precisely the industrial environments served by compression machinery.

None of that means gas compression will disappear tomorrow. Nor does it mean hazardous-location certification lacks value. Workers should have equipment designed to reduce ignition risks, and operators need machinery that meets the applicable standards.

However, Cummins cannot market fossil-gas infrastructure with one hand, wave Destination Zero with the other and expect nobody to examine the invoice.

This product is not the energy transition.

It is equipment intended to keep the existing gas machine productive, available and profitable.


Cummins’ Certification History Deserves Scrutiny

Cummins also has a particularly rotten history with the language of certification and compliance.

In 2024, the company reached a settlement with the US Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Justice and California over vehicle-emissions violations involving nearly one million Ram trucks.

The EPA says Cummins installed illegal software defeat devices in 630,000 vehicles and failed to disclose auxiliary emissions-control devices affecting hundreds of thousands more. The settlement included a $1.675 billion penalty, the largest civil penalty in Clean Air Act history.

That case involved different engines, different regulations and different conduct. It does not invalidate the GTA38GCE’s hazardous-location certification.

It does, however, destroy any argument that Cummins’ corporate language should be swallowed whole merely because the word “certified” appears near the top.

This is a company whose emissions-control software behaved differently during certification testing and normal driving. Healthy scepticism is not hostility. It is the minimum entry requirement.

Cummins should publish the precise certification scope, relevant markings, test basis and quantified support for its reliability claims. It should also correct whichever GTA38GCE displacement figure is wrong.

Preferably before another customer orders half an engine.


The Shielded Ignition Cannot Protect Cummins From Its Own Copy

Stripped of the corporate theatre, the announcement is simple.

Cummins and FW Murphy developed a GTA38GCE configuration with shielded ignition and C1D2-rated control components. That may give operators a useful option for certain classified gas-compression locations.

Everything beyond that needs evidence and careful qualification.

“Lower maintenance” needs numbers.

“Extended equipment life” needs a measured comparison.

“Improved uptime” needs field data.

“Safe operation in hazardous environments” needs the certification’s actual boundaries.

Most urgently, an engine advertised as both 18.8 litres and 37.7 litres needs somebody at Cummins to locate the missing 18.9 litres.

The engineers may have reduced the ignition risk.

The communications team has still managed to blow the fucking doors off.
