
Cummins has found another way to make September look busy: publish June.
On 1 September 2026, the newsroom produced “First-generation Cummins-powered Dodge trucks rally in Columbus”, a pleasant blast of heritage involving nearly 100 old Cummins-powered Rams, a convoy down I-65, retired engineers, factory tours and the sort of customer loyalty Corporate Communications would probably grow in a laboratory if it could.
The rally happened on 4 June.
Not late August. Not over Labor Day weekend. June.
The trucks took a morning to reach Columbus. The story took nearly three months to reach the newsroom.
Another Date For The Collection
Cummins says around 180 owners and enthusiasts attended the First-Generation Homecoming Rally, with nearly 100 trucks making the trip to the Columbus Mid-Range Engine Plant. The company had original B5.9L engineers talking about the development programme, old test trips, broken parts and the battle to turn a midrange diesel into a pickup engine.
There is enough material there to fill an article without fucking pretending it just happened.
Yet the page carries a 1 September date, adding another entry to the increasingly entertaining Cummins newsroom calendar TCAP has already been collecting. We have watched February mining news walk back through the door in July, old explainers receive new dates and previously published material acquire enough fresh metadata to look significantly younger from across the room.
Now June has arrived in September wearing a Dodge hat.
Perhaps Cummins had always intended to sit on the rally for three months. Perhaps the copy was waiting for approval. Perhaps somebody found it behind the Wedge Capsule. TCAP cannot see inside the CMS, and unlike some corporate communications departments we do not need to invent missing facts to improve the story.
The public record is enough.
Event: 4 June. Article: “1 September”, apparently.
Cummins supplied both dates.
The Safest Customers In The Building
There is something convenient about reaching backwards for old trucks when the present-day narrative becomes harder work.
A first-generation Dodge Ram cannot miss an earnings estimate. It cannot ask why a global engine manufacturer suddenly started smelling of artificial intelligence because data centres needed emergency power. It will not enquire about hydrogen losses, regulatory settlements or why another shiny Destination Zero pathway still appears to have pistons moving inside it.
It just sits there.
Old. Mechanical. Photogenic.
Even better, somebody loves it.
Cummins gets the nostalgia, the customer devotion and the engineering heritage without the inconvenience of having to persuade anybody that a bridge technology is actually a revolution. The machinery already earned its reputation decades ago.
Corporate Communications only had to find June.
And Then Came The Future
Also suspiciously dated 1 September was “Making Marine Decarbonization Practical”, which sounds altogether more forward-looking.
Then you read it.
Cummins begins with the awkward realities of marine decarbonisation: cost, weight, space, infrastructure, regulations and fuel availability. Vessels cannot simply be parked beside a charger because somebody in Columbus added another zero to a sustainability graphic, so operators need technology that works with the machinery and infrastructure they actually possess.
Enter Cummins with the future.
HVO.
Biodiesel up to B20.
Dual-fuel engines.
Diesel-electric hybrids.
Batteries supplementing diesel power.
Methanol, ethanol and ammonia where available.
And, because reality enjoys a joke too, the ability to keep running on diesel when those alternatives are not.
Destination Zero has packed a fucking jerry can.
No Fuel Of The Future
The best sentence in the whole Cummins article may be the admission that no single “fuel of the future” has yet emerged for marine.
That is considerably less confident than the destination branding.
For years, Destination Zero has sounded like a location already entered into the sat-nav. Cummins knows where the world is going; please remain seated while the portfolio transports everybody there.
The marine article sounds more like somebody has finally unfolded the map.
Different ports have different infrastructure. Alternative fuels have different storage requirements. Some vessels can use batteries more effectively than others. Fuel supply varies by geography. Operators need flexibility because nobody actually knows which technology will dominate.
That is not a destination.
That is a fucking search party.
Welcome To The Bridge
Cummins calls the answer “bridge solutions” and “bridge technologies”.
Useful phrase, bridge.
A bridge acknowledges that you have not arrived.
It also becomes rather interesting when the supposed crossing is built from products suspiciously similar to those Cummins already sells. Diesel engines continue working. Existing engines take lower-carbon fuels. Hybrid systems use batteries to reduce engine hours without removing the engines. Dual-fuel systems introduce alternatives while preserving diesel when those alternatives disappear over the horizon.
The future changes.
The Cummins invoice survives.
A diesel-electric hybrid is still diesel-electric. An engine burning HVO is still an internal-combustion engine. A dual-fuel engine specifically retaining diesel fallback has not transcended diesel because the webpage around it contains the word decarbonisation.
The hardware is remarkably stubborn.
Fortunately, adjectives are much easier to modify.
The Green Paint Department
This is the useful trick in the marine article. Cummins does not have to abandon combustion to present itself as progressing beyond combustion. It merely has to reposition continued combustion as part of the transition away from it.
The engine becomes a bridge.
Diesel becomes fallback.
Batteries become hybridisation.
Existing products become pathways.
The same metal can remain in the hull while Corporate Communications changes the colour of the fucking map.
And because the final destination remains unresolved, the bridge can stretch for quite some distance.
Cummins does not know which future marine fuel wins. The article says so. Neither does the wider industry. That uncertainty creates precisely the market Cummins needs: operators buying flexible equipment now because committing completely to whatever comes next would be commercially reckless.
Destination Zero can wait.
There are products to sell on the way.
Seventy Percent
The article eventually gets to the number that explains considerably more than the branding does.
Cummins says fuel can represent around 70% of a vessel’s operating expenses.
There we are.
Money.
A shipowner does not install a hybrid system because the phrase Destination Zero makes everybody feel warm at a conference. The owner installs it because reducing engine hours and fuel burn may save enough money to justify the hardware. HVO becomes attractive where availability, cost and carbon requirements line up. Dual-fuel capability becomes useful because expensive machinery cannot be stranded every time the next port lacks the fashionable fuel.
Marine decarbonisation therefore becomes practical at roughly the point where somebody gets the fucking spreadsheet to agree.
Cummins knows that.
Its customers certainly know that.
The grand transition language merely makes the invoice prettier.
How Long Can A Bridge Be?
There is another problem with selling the transition as a bridge.
Bridges normally have another side.
Cummins’ own article cannot tell us what that side is. It expressly says no single future fuel has emerged. Instead there are multiple candidates, different regional infrastructures and different answers for different applications.
So the “bridge” is connecting the present to a destination nobody can presently identify.
Handy.
Because if that transition takes ten, fifteen or twenty years, Cummins can spend those years selling diesel engines approved for alternative fuels, hybrid systems incorporating diesel engines, dual-fuel products retaining diesel capability, digital controls, components, servicing and whatever else becomes necessary to keep the bridge open.
At some point, a bridge this profitable starts looking less like temporary infrastructure and more like a fucking toll road.
June And Destination Eventually
That is why these two 1 September stories fit together rather better than Cummins probably intended.
The Dodge article takes a June event and gives it September newsroom life. The marine article takes continuing dependence on combustion and gives it transition-era life.
Neither requires the underlying thing to change.
The rally remains three months old.
The diesel engine remains a diesel engine.
What changes is the label attached to it.
Cummins can make the past look current and the present look futuristic without moving either one very far at all.
That is quite a communications department.
The Old Trucks Have The Better Deal
At least the first-generation Dodge owners are allowed to enjoy their engines without pretending they are anything else.
Nobody needs to call a B5.9L a transitional power architecture. Nobody has to explain that the crankshaft is supporting Cummins’ journey towards a cleaner tomorrow. Nobody places a green halo over a 1989 pickup and claims the diesel engine is spiritually adjacent to zero emissions.
It is an old truck.
It has an old diesel engine.
People still fucking like it.
Remarkably straightforward.
Three months later, Cummins remembered to publish the story.
Corporate Communications Does The Travelling
Perhaps that is the real journey across these two September articles.
The Dodge trucks travelled from Indianapolis to Columbus in June.
The marine engines are supposedly travelling towards Destination Zero.
Corporate Communications is doing considerably more mileage than either of them.
June becomes September. Diesel becomes a bridge. Continued combustion becomes decarbonisation. Uncertainty over future fuels becomes flexibility. The absence of a settled destination becomes an opportunity to sell customers several ways of getting there.
Cummins does not need TCAP to invent a counter-narrative.
It keeps publishing the raw materials.
Nearly 100 Cummins-powered Dodge trucks arrived in Columbus on 4 June.
The story arrived dated 1 September.
In an article with the same date, Cummins explained that the practical route towards marine decarbonisation still involves diesel engines, diesel fallback, hybrid combustion and a menu of alternative fuels because nobody yet knows what actually replaces them.
June got reheated.
Diesel got rebranded.
Destination Zero still needs a fucking lifeboat.
